The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA)’s Shavathon is in its 22nd year and what better way to celebrate than for the fund-raising and awareness campaign to focus on kindness. Be Colourfully Kind is the theme for this year’s Shavathon run by CANSA. It kicks off with all-day events on Saturday 24 February at selected shopping malls only throughout South Africa and continues with individual events held from 26 February to 29 March by workplaces, schools and organisations…

Spectators at this week’s African Karting Cup (AKC), which is taking place at Zwartkops Kart Circuit in Centurion between 15 – 17 February, will not only have the opportunity to see 40 of the finest participants from all over Africa battling it out, but will also be able to lend support to CANSA. CANSA is excited to host a Shavathon at the event with our theme this year – ‘Be Colourfully Kind’. It’s CANSA’s 22nd year of hosting Shavathon events and what better way to celebrate than for the karting community to focus on kindness…

CANSA is deeply saddened by the loss of a long-time friend, and supporter, Mark Pilgrim.

One of South Africa’s most treasured radio personalities, Mark was also a beloved CANSA Ambassador supporting CANSA Shavathon as well as being a Daredevil champion and numerous fundraising events in the capacity of MC for many years. He was also an avid activist for raising awareness around cancers affecting men, especially testicular cancer and promoting men’s health awareness.

It took quite a bit of hustling, negotiating and hard work to get the first Shavathon off the ground. Fortunately for CANSA, Simon Clark persevered and in 2003 events were held at 50 venues in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). Thank you Simon for the initiative you took – Shavathon is now a firm favourite on the South African calendar and well loved by all affected through cancer. Simon’s message to everyone: “If you are thinking about it, just do it – stop talking, get out there and do it, that’s when great things happen!”

We can’t wait to see you at our 20th Shavathon Anniversary on Saturday, 25 February 2023 at your local participating shopping centre! Those who’d like to host their own Shavathon event may do so from Monday, 27 February 2023 to 31 March 2023 – order your Shavathon products and start inviting everyone you know to celebrate cancer Survivors fighting the disease and remember and honour those who have passed. You can also raise funds online to support our care and support services to those affected by cancer…

CANSA is thankful to Rozanne McKenzie, presenter, MC and co-host of Jacaranda FM’s ‘The Drive Show with Rob and Roz’, for allowing us to make use of her voice talent for our 20th Shavathon Anniversary Radio Spots. We are also grateful to Daniel Baron, platinum-selling artist and popular musician, who gave us permission to use his song “A Lion’s Heart”, written in memory of his cousin Matthew de Klerk who was diagnosed with cancer age 3, and passed away at 14 years of age… – Shavathon is an SABC Foundation supported initiative.
