Twice The Fun With Shavathon Twenty-one

The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is hosting its, ever popular, CANSA Shavathon, in selected shopping centres across South Africa, on Saturday 30 September and Sunday 1 October 2023. We’re giving the public a second opportunity, this year, to shave, spray and donate in support of cancer survivors. Workplaces, businesses, clubs and schools can also host Shavathon events from 2 of October for the whole month.

#CANSAShavathon, #CANSACares #FightingCancerTogether

Elijah Masubelele, our Head: Business Development shares, “Twenty-one years ago, a group of passionate individuals came together with a vision: to create an event that would raise awareness and funds for cancer care and support. That vision became CANSA Shavathon, and it’s since become one of the most iconic and successful fundraising events in South Africa. As we celebrate the 21st anniversary of the Shavathon, I encourage everyone to get involved and to support this important cause”.

South Africans have come to know, and love, CANSA Shavathon, usually at the beginning of each year, however, to commemorate this special milestone, we changed the event date to continue with Shavathon at this time of the year going forward.

A donation fee of only R50 per adult and R25 for children under 12 years will enable you to shave or spray. You can be extra creative and choose a variety of colours to use and stencils are available to add exciting designs. Hair donations, towards making a wig for cancer survivors, can also be made at Shavathon venues. All funds raised go directly towards our education and screening initiatives as well as care and support service to cancer patients and loved ones. The colour spray is safe to use, being made of vegetable dye, and comes out when washing hair. A limited-edition certificate of honour will be given to those who make hair donations of 25cm or longer and limited edition CANSA Headwear is available for R55 per item (while stock lasts).

As Elijah says, “Together, we can shave for hope and make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.”

Apart from visiting Shavathon venues at shopping malls, you can also host your own event by registering online, via the Shavathon website or emailing adewitt@cansa.org.za, and purchasing products through the CANSA eShop.

We also invite participants to become online fundraising champions by opening an online fundraising page before participating in a Shavathon event and inviting family and friends to support the action they will take on behalf of cancer Survivors on the day, whether they shave, or spray, by making an online donation to the participant’s fundraising page.

Participants can then share their online fundraising efforts on their social media platforms using the hashtag #CANSAShavathon leading up to their participation. The online ‘Bail Out Fee’ is also applicable for anyone who wants to be involved but cannot make it to a venue on the day.

For anyone unable to participate at a venue, over the Shavathon weekend, or host an event at this time, CANSA will hold Shavathon one last time in February and March 2024.
